National Crimebeat Awards 23/24 - Derby City White Ribbon campaign - 19/03/24

Updated: Mar 21

In November 2023, young people from the Voices in Action Youth Council were pivotal to developing and implementing a city-wide campaign, which ran during the '16 days of Action' of the 2023 White Ribbon Campaign.

Derby Youth Alliance joined forces with Derby City Council and the Voices in Action Youth Council to further this campaign across many schools, statutory and voluntary organisations across Derby City on the week approaching White Ribbon Day, and on the day itself.

Find out more about our White Ribbon Campaign here.

With the support of the High Sheriff of Derbyshire - Theresa Peltier - the Derby Youth Mayor Munti nominated our White Ribbon Campaign for a National Crimebeat Award, shortly before the closing date for applications!

We found out that we had been shortlisted to the final 6 nominations, and that we were invited to London for the National Crimebeat Awards on 19th March 2024!

On the day, the 7 young people who had steered the campaign travelled by train from Derby with Michelle Butler from Derby Youth Alliance, and Adele Styles and Cllr John Whitby from Derby City Council, and arrived at the Royal National Hotel, London for a prompt 10.30am start! Each finalist group gave a 7 minute presentation of their projects, and after all groups and High Sheriffs had presented, the awards were given out.

We achieved third place for the National Crimebeat Award 2023/24, and were also awarded The High Sheriff's Association Award!

  • Winner: Merseyside

  • Runner Up: Greater London

  • Third Place: Derbyshire

  • Highly Commended: East Sussex, North Yorkshire, West Midlands.

  • Special Award: West Sussex

  • High Sheriff's Association Award: Derbyshire

  • The Burnett Presentation Award: Merseyside

Following on from the awards ceremony, official photographs were taken before we were able to eat a wonderful lunch! A Big Bus Sightseeing Bus Tour bus then arrived and collected all finalists from the hotel, and took us around London on an open top bus!

The London Eye was our final destination, where we shared a pod with the North Yorkshire finalist team!

After celebrating our wins, and saying our goodbyes to the other teams we made our way back to the overground train station that would take us home to Derby - via a quick tourist photo opportunity at South Bank of course!

Thank you to all those who supported us throughout this project, and a special thank you and round of applause to our group of young people who gave their time and dedication to the organisation of this campaign - this wouldn't have happened without you!
